Esta Bien

Eat. Dance. Laugh.

Giving thanks

At 9:30 p.m. I finally had a chance to eat dinner. And breathe.

Last night I made spaghetti with ground turkey meat. They say it’s better for you. I threw in some mushrooms, onion, garlic, fresh basil and thyme with a jar of low-sodium pasta sauce and 100% whole wheat noodles (again with the health nut business) and let it simmer for a couple hours. It was alright.

But tonight. Oh man, tonight it was GREAT. Not sure if it was the fact the flavors were better absorbed or if I was just hungry, but after tasting that first delicious bite to see if I’d microwaved it long enough, I knew I would need to take a different approach to eating this meal.

So I created a more serene ambiance, swapped the overhead lights for three lamps and poured myself a small glass of wine. Then I just sat and stared at my plate of food. After taking a long breath, my eyes closed and suddenly I realized I was much more tired than hungry. But thankfulness overcame me, so I thanked God for my food and for allowing my hands to prepare it.

Boy was that weird. I couldn’t remember the last time I genuinely thanked the Lord for my food. Sure I grew up saying grace at every meal - except breakfast. I was too tired to even pick up the spoon to eat my cereal let alone think about how grateful I should be.

And so I chose to slowly chew every bite and think about how flavorful and nutritious this pasta was. How my body was being nourished on this bitter cold night.

You see, with this class assignment and that group project and oh! don’t forget about that student organization you’re the president of… well, it’s hard to take the time to really evaluate yourself, your path in life. And who has time to be thankful?

We spend so much time asking for things and beating ourselves up for not meeting deadlines or not having the most friends, that we forget how much we’ve really accomplished. And most importantly, we neglect to be thankful for what and who has helped us achieve so much.

So, here’s to giving thanks. Even on days when you’re feet are frozen and you go 10 hours without eating.

Day at night.

Wanted: to make sweet pics like these.

Needed: lessons in aperture.

Dear wine,
Thanks.
